چکیده

NISA AND TOMA were hunter-gatherers, !Kung San people living in Botswana’s inhospitable Kalahari desert during the 1960s. Their way of life was as different from that in an industrialized, economically developed society as any on earth, yet their sentiments are as familiar and easy to comprehend as those of your neighbor next door. They involve social exchange, interactions in which one party provides a benefit to the other conditional on the recipient’s providing a benefit in return (Cosmides, 1985; Cosmides & Tooby, 1989; Tooby & Cosmides, 1996). Among humans, social exchange can be implicit or explicit, simultaneous or sequential, immediate or deferred, and may involve alternating actions by the two parties or follow more complex structures. In all these cases, however, it is a way people cooperate for mutual benefit. Explicitly agreed-to forms of social exchange are the focus of study in economics (and are known as exchange or trade), while biologists

Cross-cultural evidence of cognitive adaptations for social exchange among the Shiwiar of Ecuadorian Amazonia.

On the basis of evolutionary game theory, it was hypothesized that humans have an evolved cognitive specialization for reasoning about social exchange, including a subroutine for detecting cheaters. This hypothesis led to a specific prediction: Although humans are known to be poor at detecting potential violations of conditional rules in general, they should nevertheless detect them easily when...

Theory of mind broad and narrow: reasoning about social exchange engages ToM areas, precautionary reasoning does not.

Baron-Cohen (1995) proposed that the theory of mind (ToM) inference system evolved to promote strategic social interaction. Social exchange--a form of co-operation for mutual benefit--involves strategic social interaction and requires ToM inferences about the contents of other individuals' mental states, especially their desires, goals, and intentions. There are behavioral and neuropsychologica...

Selective impairment of reasoning about social exchange in a patient with bilateral limbic system damage.

Social exchange is a pervasive feature of human social life. Models in evolutionary biology predict that for social exchange to evolve in a species, individuals must be able to detect cheaters (nonreciprocators). Previous research suggests that humans have a cognitive mechanism specialized for detecting cheaters. Here we provide neurological evidence indicating that social exchange reasoning ca...

Early emerging system for reasoning about the social nature of food.

Selecting appropriate foods is a complex and evolutionarily ancient problem, yet past studies have revealed little evidence of adaptations present in infancy that support sophisticated reasoning about perceptual properties of food. We propose that humans have an early-emerging system for reasoning about the social nature of food selection. Specifically, infants' reasoning about food choice is t...

Emotional Intelligence predicts individual differences in social exchange reasoning.

When assessed with performance measures, Emotional Intelligence (EI) correlates positively with the quality of social relationships. However, the bases of such correlations are not understood in terms of cognitive and neural information processing mechanisms. We investigated whether a performance measure of EI is related to reasoning about social situations (specifically social exchange reasoni...
